What is 4 Weeks to Wellness?
I like to call 4 Weeks to Wellness a crash course in real food. There is a lot of confusing and conflicting information out there, not to mention the misconception that healthy eating is just too expensive and time-consuming. In this book, I set out to clear all that up and finally get to the bottom of what it means to be healthy. You will get all the tools you need to make real food work for your real life…even when that life gets messy and busy and hectic and crazy.
In 4 Weeks to Wellness, I challenge readers to eat only real food for 4 weeks and I make it super-easy for you by laying out exactly what real food means and then guiding you through lessons on building balanced meals, meal prepping, meal planning, label reading, and more! After reading this book, you will understand exactly how to find healthy, whole foods and how to make them work for your life. You won’t have to spend hours in the grocery store reading labels or whole afternoons in the kitchen cooking.
Best of all, as I stress in the book, you’ll learn that healthy living doesn’t have to mean following a diet or set of rules all of the time. I truly believe that when you have the knowledge and understanding of what your body truly needs, you can enjoy life’s little indulgences without the guilt, shame, and other emotions that often come with labeling foods as “good” or “bad”.
What’s Inside 4 Weeks to Wellness?
4 Weeks to Wellness is broken up into six chapters.
Chapter 1 is devoted to determining what real food is…and what it isn’t. No food groups are excluded here. You’ll learn how to find high-quality foods from all food groups, including meat, eggs, seafood, produce, dairy, whole, grains, nuts, and seeds. We’ll dive into food quality guidelines (organic, grass fed, etc.) and how to find the best quality that works for your budget and lifestyle.
Chapter 2 is all about label reading and how to find foods that aren’t heavily refined and don’t have a bunch of added sugar. You’ll learn about how sugar affects your body and brain and some surprising sources of hidden sugars.
Chapters 3, 4, and 5 dive more into the practical aspects of making real food work for you. You’ll learn how to build a balanced plate (without counting calories or measuring out everything you eat), how to meal plan and meal prep like a pro, and how real food can help to improve your health, energy, and physical performance.
The final chapter prepares you for life outside of the “rules” of the challenge. Real life doesn’t have rules, and most of us are tired of being bogged down by diet rules. With the education in this book, you’ll be able to make your own rules for healthy living. I have my lines in the sand (I haven’t had fast food or soda in years), but I also allow myself foods I enjoy (like ice cream or chocolate) without feeling like I failed at my diet or have to start over on Monday because I finally understand how to fit all foods into my life.
There are also shopping and label reading guides (including my favorite brands) to help you when you shop! The 4 Weeks to Wellness Cookbook will be coming out later this year, but in the meantime, I have a one week meal plan + recipes + grocery list available for download (plus the recipes on this site) to get you started.
Why did I write 4 Weeks to Wellness?
I wrote this book because I. Have. Tried. It. All. I spent way too much of my life “on a diet” and hating myself for inevitably failing at said diet. Even when I found paleo, which I didn’t look at as a diet, I eventually got burnt out on trying to follow the rules or feeling guilty when I had something that wasn’t paleo. It wasn’t until I went back to school and received my Master of Science in Health and Nutrition Education from Hawthorn University that the wheels in my head began to turn and the idea for this book was born (although it would be many more years before it became a reality).
Once I understood that eating a simple, whole foods diet most of the time is one of the keys to lasting health, I was able to let go of the rules and just do what works for ME and my family. I’m not gonna lie, navigating food choices can be more difficult when you aren’t following a strict set of rules, but it is also totally freeing. You get to decide what works for you and what doesn’t. You can feel confident in your food choices and learn how to cut through the diet noise and make the choices that work for you. You can feel your best and know you are caring for your body for the long term and I am here to help.
